Snowfall of 4-6 inches may accumulate early in week
According to weather experts, Butler County will likely avoid a weekend of winter weather, but could see a storm Monday night.
“Be prepared for maybe a messy commute, especially Tuesday morning, based on the current timeline,” said Myranda Fullerton, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh.
According to the service's forecast, the county has a 20% chance of light snow showers Friday night. Then, Saturday afternoon, there will be more chance of snow with accumulation around a half-inch possible.
Although neighboring Allegheny County has been issued a hazardous weather outlook between Saturday afternoon and Sunday, Butler County has not been placed in any advisory.
Fullerton said Allegheny County's weather outlook is based on potential for light amounts of sleet or freezing rain, but as of Friday's forecast, Butler County doesn't look like it will have those conditions.
“Sunday, for the most part, we should have a break,” she said.
Butler County's turn for a wintery mix will come Monday, which could include a “couple inches” of snowfall and potential for sleet and freezing rain.
According to Fullerton, those conditions will likely continue through Monday night and into Tuesday. Early estimates for the county's potential accumulation overnight range between four to six inches.
Fullerton said that could vary widely, and there is a level of uncertainty with forecasts that are multiple days away.
“I think there's going to be a pretty tight gradient,” she said. “We've got a warm convection that would work against some of the higher accumulations being talked about right now, and those you'll probably see tossed around on social media.”
Fullerton said to keep up to date with the latest changes in the service's forecast, people can follow the National Weather Service's social media pages and regularly check its website.
