Youth shine in 'Broadway'

Sing Hosanna! show features patriotic music

Talk about a toe-tappin’ trip down memory lane.

Sing Hosanna! has created a patriotic pageant of sorts with its “Give My Regards to Broadway” student production.

The music of George M. Cohan comes to life with several sets of dancing feet. Twenty-four eager students, ages 7 to 16, are cast in the production, which is under the direction of Ralph Christy Jr.

The song choice and student acting reminded me of the productions we did when I was a student: A strong theme of patriotism, some soft-shoe and a story line that weaves it all together.

The first scene opens with the song “Give My Regards to Broadway” and includes “The Yankee Doodle Boy.” We are introduced to Dick Foster, an off-Broadway director played delightfully by Christian Cendrowski, and his pianist Eddie Cowles, portrayed by Maxwell McAuley.

The duo is on the hunt for talent and capital to launch their show. Enter Mary Collins, played by Claire Lindsey, and their talent search is over.

Lindsey, who is no stranger to the stage but is finally cast in a lead role, does not disappoint. Her stage presence is confident and direct and her sweet vocals are enjoyable.

Christy features several examples of raw talent in this production who show a promising future on the stage, including Tori Cupps, who plays Millie, and Anna Fabrizzi as Betty, most noteworthy in her performance of “Virginia Song.”

Act Two begins with an energetic company number, “It’s a Grand Old Flag/The Yankee Doodle Boy,” and some drama with a diva named Mona played by Nikki Ambrose, who puts the snob in snobby.

Oh, and did I mention gangsters? Tiny Trey Hixon plays Legs Ruby, a bookie who favors horses, and his turf war cohorts Mugsy and Bugsy are played by Than Archer and Malachi Stephenson.

This show is just a fun patriotic romp with some cute kids that will leave you smiling and your toes tapping as you leave.
