Dog parks to reopen after temporary closure

Jade's Dog Park at Butler's Alameda Park is scheduled to reopen Tuesday after being closed to address issues related to a kennel cough outbreak.
Outbreak led to shutdowns

Two Butler County parks will return to the dogs when they reopen Tuesday after being closed to address issues related to a kennel cough outbreak.

The dog park area in Cranberry Township’s Community Park was closed last week after reports of nearly 20 cases of kennel cough in the county. Since Thursday’s closure, officials sanitized the park with a bleach/water mix as recommended by the Butler County Humane Society.

The closure came just days after Jade’s Dog Park at Butler’s Alameda Park was closed for the same reason. Both dog parks are expected to reopen Tuesday.

Officials asked dog owners to avoid the parks if their pooch shows any signs of a respiratory issue.

Symptoms of kennel cough, which is prevalent in late summer and early fall, is a progressive, dry sounding, hacking cough that becomes worse with exercise and is occasionally accompanied by nasal drainage. Antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections are available as are cough suppressants.

“Please keep in mind that any of these canine respiratory viruses are spread directly from dog to dog and through the air,” the post reads.

A post on the Cranberry Township Community Park’s Facebook page encourages owners to take their dogs to a veterinarian if they believe there is an issue.
