'All Things Bassoon' concert set at SRU

The SRU Bassoon Choir consists of, in front, Tatiana Behringer, and back from left, Samantha Machler, Jasmine Medina, Abigail Metcalf and Lucas Haight. Missing is Brendan Wilson.

The instrument usually at the back of the woodwind section will come to the forefront to be featured in “A Concert of All Things Bassoon” in April at Slippery Rock University.

The SRU Bassoon Choir, under the direction of Amy Baker, will present the free concert at 7:30 p.m. April 9 in the recital hall of the Swope Music Building on campus.

Performing will be six bassoon students, Baker playing contrabassoon, and the featured guest soloist David Sogg of the Pittsburgh Symphony.

Sogg will play two solo pieces, and the students will perform a number of bassoon quartets and quintets. Baker will also play a piece on the contrabassoon, a larger version of a bassoon that sounds an octave lower.

Sogg joined the Pittsburgh Symphony as co-principal bassoon in 1989.

A proponent of new classical music, he has performed contemporary American, Chinese, French and Russian pieces.
