Driver hurt in pickup accident at I-79 ramp
JACKSON TWP — A woman was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital Monday night after a pickup overturned and caught fire at the northbound Interstate 79 off ramp to Route 528.
Assistant Fire Chief Dale Hall of the Harmony Volunteer Fire Company said this morning that the woman, whose name was unavailable, was pinned through the driver’s side window.
“We had to lift the vehicle off her,” Hall said.
Firefighters used air bags to lift the vehicle.
Hall said driver was either partially thrown out of the truck or tried to escape the truck when it pinned her.
Before Hall arrived at the scene, someone used a fire extinguisher to douse the blaze.
Hall said the woman was alert and talking to medical personnel before she was flown to UPMC Presbyterian.
The Zelienople and Evans City volunteer fire departments assisted Harmony. Roughly 30 firefighters responded to the 8:03 p.m. 911 call.
The off ramp was closed until the accident was cleared. Crews left the scene at 9:32 p.m.
A police report on the accident was unavailable this morning.
