2 homes catch fire within hours

Two structure fires broke out Sunday morning, one in Butler Township and the other in Clinton Township.

According to Butler County dispatch records, the two fire calls were within two hours of one another, the first being called in around 8:49 a.m. in Butler Township.

Butler Township firefighters were called to 119 Saxonburg Road for a report of fire in an attic and residents still inside the home. The four residents had exited the home safely by the time the first units arrived, and none of them were injured, according to Assistant Fire Chief Joe LaDue.“The first units when they arrived, there were visible flames from the attic and some smoke,” LaDue said.LaDue said crews were able to knock down the fire quickly, though firefighters had to cut into the roof to provide ventilation.“The attic space had quite a bit of fire damage on it,” he said. “I'd say about 30% of the attic space was burnt up.”LaDue said based on preliminary findings, he believes the fire started near the stove in the first-floor kitchen. The fire then worked its way up in the void space between the studs in the walls, working up to the attic's rafters.Despite its origin on the first floor, there was less damage in that area, though there was some from smoke, heat and water, according to LaDue.LaDue said the primary concern was making sure the fire in the attic stayed out and finding all the spaces where the flames had extended into.“We did put a nice layer of foam down to prevent rekindling of the structure,” he said.LaDue said the residents told firefighters they were sleeping when the fire broke out.LaDue said an estimate of damage was not immediately available. The home is not insured.Butler City was also called to assist Butler Township, before a second call was issued. Second-call departments included Saxonburg, Herman, Penn Township and Unionville fire departments, though not all made it to the scene before being called off.The crew from the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company did not have to wait long until it had a call of its own.

Saxonburg crews responded to a Clinton Township home, where a chimney fire extended further into the structure.“We had flames and smoke showing on the outside of the home,” said Saxonburg Fire Chief Chris Dean.At least eight departments were called around 10:16 a.m. to 117 Timber Ridge Road, according to Butler County dispatch records.Dean said the homeowner made it out safely before crews arrived and was using a garden hose to spray the outside of the building. He said it took about 15 minutes for crews to knock down the blaze, but they spent more time checking for further extension.“We ended up pulling the siding off the house to expose the chimney,” Dean said. “We checked the inside of the chimney to make sure nothing was still burning.”Dean said the cause is still unclear. He said the homeowner reported using the fireplace Saturday night.“He said he had a fire going in the fireplace last night,” Dean said. “It was still smoldering in there when we got there.”A damage estimate was not immediately available. The home was insured.
