Butler Cubs host boxing show Saturday
At least eight Butler Cubs boxers will be displaying their skills Saturday night at an amateur fight card at the Butler Cubs Hall.
The show — featuring boxing and kick-boxing bouts — gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
“I’ve been here 40 years and we’ve probably put on 30 of these shows,” Cubs boxing trainer Don Spinetti said. “We work hard to get evenly skilled fighters in the ring with each other.
“Seeing one of our guys beat the heck out of somebody doesn’t do anything for anybody.”
Cubs boxers on the card include veteran amateurs Billy Wolfe (26-5), Lucas Adams (7-12) and Donovan Malovich (26-4), while Brad Regis and Dustin Stoner have had a few fights.
Malovich, 16, is a member of the Butler High School wrestling team who will be returning to boxing action for the first time in a few months. He is facing Braden Accazio (25-5) in “what should be one of the better bouts of the night,” Spinetti said. “Those guys will get after each other.”
Wolfe was a Pittsburgh Gold Gloves champion last year and will fight Silvio Cercone, a Gold Gloves champion this year.
The 18-year-old Adams (7-12) takes on Wade Lipscomb (20-5) in a rematch from a bout last year that resulted in Adams losing a split decision.
“I actually knocked him down right at the end of the third (and final) round in that fight, but the referee said it came just after the bell,” Adams said.
“They were handing out title belts to the winners at that show and he (Lipscomb) handed me his belt afterward. He said I beat him.”
That bout was held in Pittsburgh.
“That was in his hometown, now we’ll be in my hometown,” Adams said. “I’ve lost a few fights where I’ve knocked the other guy down. My problem has been I hold back too much ... I’m always afraid I’m going to tire out before the fight’s over.
“I’ve learned that lesson. I won’t be holding anything back on Saturday.”
Three Cubs fighters — Shane Fitzpatrick, Nick Davison and Damon Thiele — will be making their amateur boxing debuts.
“You’re never quite sure how that’s gonna go,” Spinetti said. “Guys can look great sparring in here, then the lights come on, they’re in front of a crowd ... Some guys tense up and that makes your body tired right away.”
Fitzpatrick doesn’t see that happening to him. He’s been in the gym training since January of 2014.
“I’m more excited than nervous,” Fitzpatrick, 16, said. “I’ve been waiting for this.
“I like boxing because it’s an individual sport, one on one. You get out of it what you put into it. It’s a physical sport and I’ve learned I don’t have to fight outside, I can do it in the gym.”
A pair of 57-year-olds, Tom Cammisa and Rick Kunselman, will fight for a senior kick-boxing title. Kick-boxing rules require a minimum of eight kicks per round.
“This will be an intense fight, I’m sure of that,” said Cammisa, who trains 30 taekwondo and/or kick-boxing students in Butler.
All bouts will be scheduled for three rounds. Tickets are $12 and will be available at the door.
