A Butler Township man was allegedly caught with suspected crack cocaine and heroin this week in Butler County Prison, police said.

James A. Cogley, 39, was arraigned Wednesday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance by an inmate and misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

He was returned to the county prison, where he's being held on $55,000 bail and five probation detainers, prison officials said.

Cogley was wanted on a bail piece after skipping out on a previous bond in an unrelated 2017 felony drug case when a bail enforcement agent called them about 4 p.m. Monday.

The agent advised police that he believed Cogley was at an apartment on Walker Avenue. Police assisted as the agent went into the home and found Cogley.

On the floor and on an end table, according to court documents, were “numerous used syringes, crack pipes, empty stamp bags (of suspected heroin), as well as other forms of drug paraphernalia.”

Cogley was searched, police said, and found with two stamp bags of suspected heroin in one of his pants pockets.

Before police took him to the county prison they asked if he had any other contraband on him, documents said. He told them he did not.

He was eventually turned over to corrections officers. While being searched in the prison, police said, the officers turned up two small bags of suspected crack and a stamp bag of suspected heroin.
