Slippery Rock man faces felony DUI charge after prior convictions

SLIPPERY ROCK — A three-time drunken driver is charged with felony driving under the influence in connection with a traffic stop last week at Franklin and South Main streets.

Borough police said Darryl J. Armstrong, 53, of Slippery Rock was two-and-a-half times the state's legal limit for alcohol after he was pulled over around 8 p.m. Sept. 18 for running a red light.

He was arraigned Wednesday on a felony charge of DUI and a summary red light violation. He was later released on his own recognizance.

Following the stop, police said, Armstrong smelled of alcohol and he admitted he had “a few” drinks after work. An officer also allegedly noticed six empty beer cans on his pickup truck's passenger floor.

He was subsequently taken to the state police barracks in Butler Township for a breath test, which allegedly showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.204 percent, police said. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

Police in charging documents noted Armstrong has three prior DUI convictions. Because of his record, the DUI charge, which is normally a misdemeanor, was upgraded to a felony.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 9. Online court records did not list an attorney. He could not be reached for comment.
