Legion seeks help with traveling memorial

The Ellwood City American Legion Post 157 is seeking volunteers to help host the Vietnam Moving Wall traveling memorial later in the year.

The memorial, a half-sized replica of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Veterans Memorial, has toured around the country for more than 30 years. The group plans to bring the wall to Ellwood City from Aug. 17 to 22.

Commander Joe Fisher said the group had previously planned to host the wall two years ago, but postponed the project due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It hasn’t been here in Ellwood City for a long time, and we thought it was a big success the last time it came through,” he said.

Fisher said that volunteers with the project would be involved both with pre-visit paperwork and information along with running the site and event when the wall is in Ellwood City.

“It’s not just a couple people trying to do this thing — it’s a huge thing,” he said. “Different people have to be involved with different other people to do it.

The first organizational meeting for volunteers will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Ellwood City Historical Society Center, 310 5th Street, Ellwood City.
