Fuel taxes help municipalities repair, plow roads

Butler County municipalities will be getting a bit more money from the state this year to help fix their roads.

Overall, the state will be disbursing nearly $21 million more this year than the $445 million it distributed in 2016 — about a 5-percent increase. The money is being released to municipalities starting today.

This year, Butler County will receive nearly $8 million, an increase of more than $360,000 from what was received in 2016.

Liquid fuels taxes fund annual payments to municipalities to help pay for such expenses as snow removal and road repaving.

The money comes from a state tax on the sale of fuel.

The top five municipalities in Butler County for 2017 according to liquid fuels tax allocations are:

Cranberry Township — $909,271.78

Butler Township — $608,586.25

Adams Township — $435,669.05

Butler City — $416,419.41

Center Township — $336,514.42

All 33 townships, 23 boroughs and City of Butler got money through the liquid fuels tax program.
