Sentence handed out in fleeing, DUI case

A Butler man was sentenced to the county's Intermediate Punishment program in Butler County Court Thursday, after being charged with fleeing from police and crashing while intoxicated.

Robert D. Wrobel, 31, was sentenced to 78 months in the program by Judge William Shaffer, with five months to be served on house arrest with electronic monitoring.

He was also ordered to pay court costs, $1,700 in fines, complete an Alcohol Highway Safety School, complete a drug and alcohol assessment, attend a Victim Impact Panel and complete 175 hours of community service.

Wrobel pleaded guilty Jan. 17 to misdemeanor driving under the influence highest rate, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement and summary driving without a license.

He also was initially charged with two other counts of DUI and several summary traffic violations, which were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Butler police filed the charges after an incident June 13.

A be-on-the-lookout alert was sent out for an unidentified off-road motorcycle traveling without lights on Route 422 east, which was later spotted on Route 8, headed into Butler.

An officer saw the vehicle, identified as a Coolster 125cc dirt bike, turn westbound on West New Castle Street. Wrobel, who was driving without lights, refused to stop, police said.

He allegedly ran stop signs at North Washington, North Chestnut and Broad streets. When he turned onto Broad Street, police said, he traveled the wrong way.

The chase came to an abrupt end, documents said, when Wrobel turned eastbound onto West North Street and hit a curb, throwing him from the bike.

Wrobel was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for medical treatment and was found to be intoxicated, with a blood-alcohol level of 0.181 percent.

He apologized during Thursday's proceeding, calling the incident “out of character.”
