Butler votes for Connoquenessing Creek upgrades

BUTLER — Butler City Council voted to support a project that will improve a section of Connoquenessing Creek.

Dave Andrews, president of the Connoquenessing Watershed Alliance, spoke at Thursday's meeting about the organization's project, which will add habitation devices to the stream in the area of Memorial Park.

Additionally, the project will help protect against flooding, which Andrews said has already been proven.

“I think it would have been a lot worse if we hadn't had anything done already,” he said. “There are places where we dropped trees into the stream, it deflected water into the flood plain.”

The project will also protect the shoreline, and add more vegetation to appropriate areas along the stream. The project will make for a “nice recreation area” in Memorial Park, according to Andrews.

The project will be done at no cost to the city, according to Andrews, because the alliance has funding sources allowing it to complete the work.

Mayor Ben Smith said the project could be completed by next spring.

Council member Jeff Smith made the motion to write a letter of support to the alliance.

“This will be huge for Memorial Park,” Smith said. “It's good for the creek bed, and it's free.”

The council also approved a motion to advertise for the sale of a used 2010 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab that is surplus to the needs of the city Bureau of Police.
