Dancing with The Boss
CONNOQUENESSING TWP — Dawn Spale says she won the right lottery this past week.
It wasn’t the national $1.6 billion Powerball, but rather a ticket that led to an opportunity to “Dance in the Dark” with Bruce Springsteen at his Saturday night concert in Pittsburgh.
“Last week I told all my co-workers that I would rather dance with Bruce than win the billion dollar Powerball,” said Spale, who works at Care Chiropractic Center on Route 68. “I kept telling them all week that I was going to dance with him.”
Spale brought to the concert a sign that asked Springsteen if he would be her last dance before her wedding, which is July 2.
The 30-year-old Nebraska native got close enough for the legendary rock star to see it after she and her fiance, Zachary Smith, won a lottery that got them tickets to stand in the front of the pit in front of the Consol Energy Center stage.
The couple had to stand in a line with 1,200 other concert goers before the show for a chance to make it to the front row.
“They took 350 people from the line,” she said.
Spale and her fiance had ticket numbers 245 and 246. The randomly drawn number that started the lucky count off was number 237.
“So we were the eighth and ninth people selected,” she said.
Spale said she brought the sign out toward the end of Springsteen’s set.
“He had seen it a couple songs before,” she said. “He looked and smiled at it.”
During the encore, Springsteen grabbed the sign and asked the crowd what they thought, prompting a loud applause.
He motioned for Spale to join him on stage.
“I just tried to stay calm,” she said. “It was one of the best things that has happened to me. I was ecstatic.”
While she was certainly hopeful to dance with her favorite musician, Spale said she didn’t think it would actually work out.
“I thought maybe I had a chance,” she said. “But I totally did not expect it to happen.”
Spale said both she and her fiance are “mega fans” of Springsteen and have been to his concerts on more than a handful of occasions since Smith first introduced the artist to her in 2012.
“He’s the one who made me into a fan,” she said of her fiance. “So I have him to thank.”
Last February the couple saw the Springsteen cover band Bruce in the USA at the Altar Bar in Pittsburgh.
Smith made a few pre-show arrangements for the gig.
“When they started playing “She’s the One,” they brought us both up on stage and he (Smith) proposed,” Spale said. “It was something special.”
When Spale was finished dancing with Springsteen Saturday night, she slipped him a save the date invitation to her wedding.
“I’m always thinking of ‘what ifs,’” she said. “I had just received the save the dates in the mail, so I grabbed one on the remote chance I got on stage.”
She joked that the couple is still looking for a wedding band if Springsteen is interested.
