A Butler County Prison inmate died Monday after he was found unresponsive in his cell that morning.

Warden Joe DeMore could not confirm whether Charles G. Petredis, 65, of Butler died at Butler Memorial Hospital or en route.

DeMore said Petredis did not answer when called out of his cell, leading prison staff to check inside the cell around 10 a.m.

“He was unresponsive,” he said.

Corrections officers and medical staff kept Petredis alive until EMTs arrived.

“They called a Code Blue and performed CPR,” DeMore said.

He praised prison employees for their quick response to the situation.

“Our staff showed a high level of professionalism going above and beyond to try and save his life,” DeMore said.

Butler Ambulance took Petredis to Butler Memorial Hospital. DeMore was notified around noon about Petredis' death.

Butler County Coroner William Young said an autopsy was performed Mon- day to establish a cause of death.

“It's pending,” Young said about a determination.

Petredis was incarcerated on a rape case in which he was accused of molesting a boy for nearly eight years.

Public Defender Kimberly Hudak, who was representing Petredis, said he was released at some point, but jailed again when a new complaint including additional allegations was filed.

Jury selection for his trial was set for January, but a competency evaluation was requested.
