Pioneers win first-ever state baseball crown
Dan Hill and Scott Jordan were the winning pitchers over the weekend as the Butler County Community College baseball team swept North Hampton in a best-of-three series for the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association championship.
The Pioneers recorded consecutive 5-4 victories in Bethlehem to win their first-ever PCAA baseball title.
Hill won the first game, tossing a four-hitter in a complete game. He struck out two and walked two.
Karns City graduate Nate McCollough had three singles and two RBI, with Butler graduate Todd Walker adding a double, a single and two RBI.
Jordan, a Karns City graduate, pitched a complete game in the second game, striking out seven and allowing six hits. The Pioneers had to rally from behind to win Game 2.
Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, BC3 (21-8) got a leadoff single from Walker and a sacrifice bunt from Butler graduate Joe Rekich. Walker scored the tying run when Union graduate Derek Carmichael reached on a throwing error.
The next two batters were walked intentionally before Carmichael scored on a wild pitch to win the championship.
Walker had two hits in Game 2 and Seneca Valley graduate Glenn Sharrar had a double and an RBI.
The Pioneers don't play again until March, when they head to Florida to prepare for the spring season.
