Man arrested, charged with 24 offenses

Strangulation, DUI among them

State police arrested a Butler man Monday morning after he allegedly led them on a chase following a domestic incident that resulted in strangulation and other charges.

Garrett Mauthe, 45, was sent to Butler County Prison following arraignment Monday by District Judge William O'Donnell, who issued a bond of $30,000 cash.

Mauthe has been charged with 24 offenses, varying from felonies to traffic citations.

His most serious charges include felonies of strangulation, fleeing from an officer and a third-offense DUI. He also has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of simple assault and 19 summary offenses.

According to charging documents, state police responded at 11:45 p.m. Sunday for a 911 hang-up call to a home on Queen Junction Road in Clay Township.“911 reported hearing screaming and fighting, then the line disconnected,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.During their investigation, police said they spoke with a male and female victim. The woman is Mauthe's wife, but the document did not indicate the relationship of the other victim to the wife or Mauthe.According to documents, Mauthe was at home when an argument with his wife led to him strike both victims.“Mauthe left the residence, then returned and struck (the male victim) in the face again and put him in a 'choke hold' by squeezing around the neck while continuing to strike him in the face,” said the officer in the affidavit.Police said both victims showed signs of injury. After the alleged assault and before state police arrived at the scene, Maude fled from the home.According to the documents, a different trooper saw Mauthe's red Nissan Titan pickup truck on Thompsontown Road, and it failed to stop at a stop sign as it turned east on Euclid Road.Police said they pulled behind the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle was traveling “at a high rate of speed and failed to stop.”According to the documents, while trying to turn from North Washington Road onto Campbell Road, the truck went off the road and slammed into a utility pole. The vehicle came to rest about 2.5 miles from where police first noticed the truck.Police said Mauthe's license was DUI suspended, and there were indications that he had been drinking, including an odor of alcohol, drooping eyelids and slurred speech.“Open Bud Light beer cans were observed throughout the vehicle,” said the officer in the affidavit.According to documents, Mauthe later refused chemical testing at Butler Memorial Hospital.O'Donnell placed conditions on Maude's bond, which include reporting to a probation officer, making an appointment for a drug and alcohol assessment and being supervised with a secure continuous remote alcohol monitor, or SCRAM device, which provides alcohol and location monitoring.Mauthe's preliminary hearing will be at 1 p.m. March 2 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
