KUTZTOWN — Matt Adams opened the top of the 11th inning with a solo home run to give the Slippery Rock University baseball team a 6-5 victory over West Chester in the second round of the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional in Kutztown Friday.

The win was the 700th of Jeff Messer's 22-year coaching career at The Rock.

Adams had a two-run single in the first inning and an RBI double in the third inning, finishing with four RBI. The double was Adams' 21st of the season, tying the school record.

The Rock (34-16) belted out 17 hits in the game, four by M.J. Parsons and three apiece by Adams, Scott Bender and Rich Michalek. Grove City High School graduate Billy Herman added a double.

Slippery Rock High School graduate Mike DeCola picked up the win, allowing three hits, no runs, three walks and had seven strikeouts over the final five innings.

West Chester (32-15) had runners on first and third and no outs in the bottom of the 10th, but DeCola picked up two strikeouts, then used an intentional walk to load the bases and set up a forceout at any base.

A groundout to short ended the inning.

DeCola opened the 11 with two more strikeout, then walked a batter before inducing a fly out to end the game.

SRU will face top-seeded Kutztown (47-5) in a 9 a.m. contest Saturday while No. 5 seed West Chester will face Shippensburg (28-23) in the loser's bracket.
