Something for everyone
FRANKLIN TWP — Retail management brought Ken Macadaeg from Michigan to Butler.
His career has taken a bit of a turn since.
Macadaeg, who put a pro shop into the All About Golf (formerly Mount Chestnut) facility a couple of years ago, teamed with his brother, Kevin, to buy the complex from Wade Orloski in December.
Kevin Macadaeg is a doctor who lives in Indianapolis and works at the only purely spinal hospital in the country.
“We talk on the phone for an hour or two every Sunday, about family stuff and this place,” Ken Macadaeg said. “We're not just taking it over. We want to improve it.”
All About Golf offers golfers plenty as it is.
The facility's pro shop offers all of the name brands in clubs, golf balls and apparel, along with odds and ends like gift bags, book ends and yard ornaments.
“We've got pretty much everything in here,” Macadaeg said of the shop. “We try to stay current with all of the latest gear.”
Macadaeg operated a retail golf shop for 21 years — he was in charge of Golf Etc. on Route 8 — “so I know that side of the (golf) business pretty well,” he said.
He also specializes in golf club repair and club fitting, a popular feature of the shop.
“Having the club fit the golfer is so important,” Macadaeg said. “It makes a big difference in a golfer's game. It aids in the comfort level and natural feel of the swing.”
All About Golf has covered golf bays on its driving range. The range also has lights, enabling golfers to use the range day or night, rain or shine.
The facility is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
“The driving range is probably the most popular part of the facility,” Macadaeg said. “The availability of it is the biggest thing.
“It's raining today (Friday) and people are still coming here to work on their game.”
All About Golf also has a putting green and chipping area, including a sand trap to practice hitting from.
The 9-hole course features par 3 and par 4 holes.
“You think of a nine-hole golf course and you think of a chipping course with a bunch of short par 3's,” Macadaeg said. “But a golfer can use every club on this course. Some holes are longer than 300 yards.
“This is a great practice course. Golfers come here to work on their game and people come here to learn how to play the game. It's good for both.”
All About Golf has a PGA pro — Tim Nypaver — available for golf lessons. Prices range from $60 (30-minute lesson) to $1,000 (12-hour package). Junior golfers 16 and younger receive 30 percent off all packages and lessons of four hours or longer can be shared by families.
Youths may also take advantage of the First Tee program at the course every Tuesday. That program teaches youths golf etiquette along with the game itself.
Group lesson rates are available and all lessons include video analysis. Nypaver can be reached at 412-608-5319.
All About Golf does not accept tee times, operating on a first-come, first-serve basis, thought it will make exceptions and reserve time on the course for large groups.
“People like knowing they can just come and play here on a nice day without having to schedule a time,” Macadaeg said.
