Lone Star edges Kentucky

John Smiedala of Lone Star College- Kingwood is mobbed by teammates after his fly ball to right scored the winning run in the Coyotes' 3-2 victory over Kentucky Friday in the first round of the National Club Baseball Association's Division II World Series at Pullman Park.

John Smiedala drove home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Lone Star College to a 3-2 win over the University of Kentucky in the opening round of the National Club Baseball Association's Division II World Series at Pullman Park Friday.

Smiedala went 2-for-3 and drove in all three runs for Lone Star.

Jeff Beck picked up the win, scattering seven hits in eight innings.

Coastal Carolina University 3, Penn State 1 — Jeff Richard went 3-for-3 with two RBI for Coastal Carolina.Jeff Richard pitched a three-hitter for the win, striking out 10 and walking eight in six innings.Colby Shine got the save.

Virginia Commonwealth 20, Hofstra 2 — VCU pounded out 18 hits and led 15-0 after four innings.Brandon Hill, the No. 9 hitter in the lineup for VCU, went 3-for-5, including a triple, and drove in six runs.Sean Holmes was 4-for-6 with five RBI.

Wyoming 8, Southern Illinois 3 — Kelly Helbig struck out seven in seven innings to pick up the win.Jeremy Stark homered for SIU — the only home run hit in the four games at Pullman Park in 224 at-bats Friday.Four more games in the double-elimination tournament were scheduled Saturday, the final two beginning at 4 and 7 p.m.
