SLIPPERY ROCK — Adam Jury's grand slam highlighted a nine-run sixth inning Friday as the Slippery Rock University baseball team rallied past Mercyhurst 11-5 in a critical PSAC West contest at Critchfield Park.
The win lifted The Rock (20-18, 12-9) into sole possession of fourth place in the West, half a game in front of idle Gannon. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out.
Jury's RBI double in the first inning gave SRU a 1-0 lead. But Mercyhurst (19-18, 10-7) took a 4-2 advantage into the bottom of the sixth.
Besides Jury's grand slam, Derek DiRuscia, Matt Howard and Carter Haponski had run-scoring singles in the sixth frame.
DiRuscia and Jacob Oswalt had three hits each to key Rock's 14-hit attack. George Hebert was the winning pitcher, tossing a complete game.
The teams are scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Erie Saturday. Friday's rained-out nightcap now will be played at 11 a.m. Sunday at Critchfield Park.
If the teams can't play Saturday, they will attempt to get in three games Sunday at Critchfield Park.
