Magic Lost

Butler BlueSox third baseman Jacob Keene asks for time after a foul ball in a game against DuBois at Michele Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park Friday night. Butler fell to DuBois, 10-7
BlueSox can't conjure victory vs. DuBois

Travis Mowery worked a pretty good magic act in the seventh and eighth innings Friday night at Michelle Krill Memorial Field at Historic Pullman Park.

Alex Miles couldn't repeat the feat in the ninth.

Anthony Rago delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single that resulted in three runs and gave the DuBois Bucks a 10-7 Tri-State Collegiate League win over the Butler BlueSox.

The loss was the second heartbreaker in as many nights for Butler (3-5), which dropped a 9-8 decision to the Black Sox on Thursday.

DuBois (6-1) rallied from a 6-1 deficit to snatch the victory.

“We got them early, they got us late,” BlueSox manager Dan Helgert said. “That happens in baseball sometimes.”

The win was a study in patience for the visiting Bucks.

After scoring four runs in the fifth — aided by an errant third strike, a walk and two wild pitches — to pull within 6-5, DuBois took a 7-6 lead in the sixth. The Bucks scored twice in the frame without a hit, taking advantage of four walks and three wild pitches.

“We've lost two pitchers we were counting on .. both are out for the season with injuries,” Helgert said. “That's thrown our bullpen off a bit.”

Still, the BlueSox battled back.

Spencer Blackburn singled with two outs in the Butler sixth, moved up two bases on wild pitches and scored the tying run on Ryan Lynn's single up the middle.

“Every time we come to Butler, or when they come to our place, it's a battle,” DuBois manager Dan Bowman said. “We love playing these guys. They are great games.”

DuBois loaded the bases with one out in the seventh against Mowery, but failed to score. Alex Altmire caught a short fly to left and Nick Reynosa made a spectacular diving catch of a drive to the gap in left-center to end the threat.

Aidan Morrison doubled to right to begin the Bucks' eighth inning. He moved to third on a wild pitch with no one out. He was left there as Mowery recorded a strikeout, induced a grounder to first base and a fly out to right.

“I don't know how Travis does it, but every time we bring him in, he does the job for us,” Helgert said.

The BlueSox tried working out of another jam in the ninth. Brandon Walker reached on a two-base error by the left fielder with one out and moved to third on a fly out to right. Daren Byers walked and stole second with two outs.

After Eli Glass was intentionally walked to load the bases, Rago cleared them with a two-run single, aided by a bobble in the outfield.

“One big hit. That's what it was gonna take to get this win,” Bowman said.

And one big pitching performance.

DuBois starter Derek Knapp allowed six runs in three innings, throwing 83 pitches. Left-hander Adam Shaffer, a St. Bonaventure hurler, came out of the bullpen to start the fourth.

Shaffer pitched the rest of the way, striking out eight and allowing only two hits to earn the win.

“He was tremendous,” Bowman said. “Adam has pitched against the BlueSox a lot. He just attacks them. Starting or relieving, it doesn't matter to him.”

BlueSox starter Kevin Schott, who attends Gannon University, threw 96 pitches in five innings. He cruised through the first three frames before throwing 51 pitches in his final two innings.
