SRU splits twinbill, nears PSAC berth

The Slippery Rock University baseball team had to settle for a doubleheader split against California (Pa.) University Friday, but The Rock is still in a position to wrap up a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Confernece playoffs, which begins Wednesday at Pullman Park.

The Rock (23-22, 11-11) earned a 7-1 win in the first game against the Vulcans, but could not pull out a win in a 3-2 loss in the nightcap.

SRU can clinch its seventh consecutive trip to the conference tournament with at least a split in a doubleheader Saturday against Cal at Critchfield Park.

If Lock Haven earns a sweep against Indiana (Pa.) University and SRU gets swept by Cal, Lock Haven would receive the fourth and final spot in the PSAC tournament.

Carter Haponski, who had missed the last 12 games with a leg injury, went 4-for-6 in the doubleader with two RBI.

Senior Zach Jeney, who graduated from California High School, picked up the win in the first game. The left-hander allowed just three hits and struck out nine.
