Library program helps kids celebrate Happy 'Mew' Year
The Butler Public Library welcomed 2019 as the year of the cat as children celebrated the Happy Mew Year.
Kids and their family members gathered Wednesday in the library's meeting room to enjoy the cat-themed New Year's program.
“New Year's is something most kids don't get to participate in because it's late at night,” said Tiffany Harkleroad, youth services librarian, who put the purr-fect program together.
“It's a nice way for the kids to celebrate (New Year's) that is just for the kids,” she said.
Keeping with the theme, Harkleroad read three stories and a poem that focused on cats.
For the poetry reading of “The Cat of Many Colors,” children were given color paper cutouts of cats glued to sticks that they held up when the color of their cat was mentioned.
Children finished off the day coloring and building paper cats as their parents helped with the scissors, of course.
April Dickerman — who homeschools her children, James, 4, and Autumn, 6, through the PA Cyber Charter School — says she brings her children to the library to get them out of their Butler home.“I like to get them out as much as I can,” Dickerman said.Dianna Edwards of Renfrew and her children are usually at the library three days a week because they fell in love with the children's library on their first visit.“We just moved here and when I walked into this children's library, I cried,” she said. “If I can make it to every function they have, I would be here. Their programs are awesome.”Edwards was at the event helping her children, Tommy, 8, Anthony, 6, Joey, 4, and Emily, 2, building cats from paper and glue.“This was a special program because our regular story time starts in February,” Harkleroad said. “When we are offseason, I try to have a couple of family programs each month and I thought this would be a good one to celebrate the New Year.”While Mew Year's is over, the library will be offering other programs and a list can be found at www.butlerlibrary.info/calendar.
