Lakers sweep SRU baseball

The Slippery Rock University baseball team got two stellar pitching performances in a doubleheader at Mercyhurst University Friday afternoon.

Unfortunately for The Rock, they didn’t get the offense to match.

Lou Trivino struck out seven and gave up just four hits, but one of those hits came off the bat of Mercyhurst centerfielder and Freeport graduate Ryan Siegel that scored Joe Pantano with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 1-0 win by the Lakers.

Dan Altavilla got the win for Mercyhurst despite walking seven. He struck out eight and only gave up five hits.

The Rock left nine runners on base in the first-game loss.

It was more of the same in the second game as Garret Peterson and John Kovalik combined for a two-hitter for SRU. The duo issued nine walks, however, including a free pass to Mercyhurst second baseman Brendan Cox with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give the Lakers a 2-1 win in Game 2.

The only highlight of the day at the plate for The Rock was Jake Weibley, who had two hits, including a double, in the nightcap.

The losses drop The Rock to 21-13 overall and 5-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West.

SRU has lost five of its last six.
