Fundraiser started for injured officer

A fundraiser has been started for the officer stabbed Tuesday after responding to a call on West Jefferson Street that resulted in another man's death.

According to the fundraiser's organizer, the officer is “out of surgery and in good spirits, surrounded by his family.”

The fundraising effort is meant to help the 27-year-old Butler City police officer, who was injured after being stabbed multiple times by John Ebberts, 37, according to state police Tuesday.

Police said that during the altercation, the officer shot and killed Ebberts. State police investigators have not released the name of the officer.

The GoFundMe was organized by Randy Ruminiski, and as of Wednesday evening, the page raised more than $17,000 of its $20,000 goal.

“He appreciates all the love and support, and is on the road to recovery,” said Ruminiski on behalf of the officer.

Ruminiski said the funds will help with any financial expenses that arise for the officer and his family.

“He is an outstanding police officer, Marine Corps veteran and husband,” said Ruminiski on the page.

No further information about the officer's recovery was available Wednesday, but Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe said that, generally, officer-involved shootings have long-term impacts.

“This is very traumatic,” Slupe said. “No officer wants to take a life. That's the last thing on their mind.”

Slupe said officers often have seconds or fractions of seconds to make critical decisions. He said the implications of these decisions can take time to recover from — not only physically, but also mentally.

“We should thank the men and women who have to make these split-second decisions,” Slupe said. “They should hold this officer in their prayers for a speedy recovery.”
