Jacob Shipton

Jacob Shipton, 18, of Slippery Rock was recognized for his achievement of Eagle Scout with a surprise at his Oct. 10 ceremony.

Jacob is the son of Karen and Dan Shipton of Slippery Rock. He graduated from Slippery Rock High School this year.

Jacob's Eagle Scout project was to replace six cement benches at the Slippery Rock Park. The benches were anchored in three feet of cement.

Jacob organized the project, which involved a number of Troop members assisting, along with adults operating heavy equipment. Jacob also remulched the area and planted flowers.

Jacob has earned 34 badges and is a member of the Order of the Arrow.

Jacob's mother, Karen Shipton, was able to have a U.S. flag flown over the White House Sept. 9 in honor of her son's achievement. The flag was presented to Jacob at his ceremony by Sgt. Hutzell, his Marine recruiter.

“It was all hush, hush,” Karen Shipton said.

Jacob reports to Parris Island, S.C., Nov. 2 for basic training.

He was assigned the role of aviation mechanic.

“I guess fixing airplanes is pretty cool,” he said.

During the ceremony, Jacob's grandfather, Leroy Shipton, and late uncle, Harold John Thompson, were both recognized for their service. His uncle died in the Korean War. His grandfather survives, having served in the Navy, during World War II.

“I was pretty choked up,” Jacob said.

Also a former Army soldier, Greg Kohler, who led the troop when Jacob joined, officiated the ceremony. Jacob said Kohler would tell him what the military would be like.

“He was glad to be the one we asked to officiate the ceremony,” Jacob said.

He said the military members in his life may have inspired him to join, but he has always kept the path in mind, even as early as elementary school.

“I always knew I wanted to be a soldier,” he said.
