Supervisors say gas co. has Center Twp. roads to repair

CENTER TWP — Township supervisors voiced frustrations at Wednesday's meeting over damage done to local roads by a utility company.

The supervisors unanimously approved sending an official 30-day notice by certified mail to Columbia Gas Co. regarding roads damaged by their subcontractors.

The damaged roads include Sunset Drive, Brandon Road and McCandless Road.

Greg Brewster, township maintenance foreman, said he plans to meet next week with a representative from the gas company to voice the township's concerns, which he has already done.

He said he showed the damage to gas company employees in April.

“I brought them up here, and I drove them around and showed them everything they needed to fix,” Brewster said.

Supervisor Philip Wulff said it is grating to see the work left undone after the township supervisors compromised on a reduced bond of $50,000 for the project.

Supervisor Chairman Ron Flatt said he is worried about what could happen if the work is not done by winter.

“We're up against it on time,” Flatt said. “I don't want Sunset and Brandon like this all winter.”

Supervisor Alan Smallwood said the roads, if left unchecked, could present a safety risk.

“We've road crew out on weekends doing repairs because we felt it was unsafe,” Smallwood said.

Flatt said the roads need tamped and backfilled correctly to allow for the appropriate amount of fill and elevation.

“We have about eight weeks of paving left, according to our engineer,” Flatt said. “Rather than wait to see if they do the work, we'll send the notification, but we'll still negotiate to try to get them to go ahead and fix it. In which case, we won't need to do any proceedings to negate that.”
