McClellan falls in 2nd playoff hole

PENN TWP — The conclusion of Butler Country Club's U.S. Open local qualifier played out on the course's No. 9 hole Thursday morning.

Butler resident Rob McClellan and Upper St. Clair's Louis Olsakovsky both finished Wednesday's round tied for the fourth and final qualifying spot at 1-over 71.

Afterward, they played one sudden-death playoff hole, both parring the par-4 No. 1 hole before play was suspended due to darkness.

Olsakovsky bested McClellan by a stroke Thursday on No. 9, also a par-4.

“I was in decent shape off the tee, in the right ruff and had an open approach shot,” McClellan said.

Both golfers had a chance to save par on the green. Olsakovsky made his 3-foot putt, but McClellan missed his from six feet and bogeyed the hole.

“You're obviously trying not to make any big mistakes, but with it being (sudden death), you are playing your opponent instead of the course.

“That hole is about 445 yards and is a tough par-4,” McClellan added. “Par is often good enough to win the hole.”

McClellan, the director of golf at Slippery Rock Golf Club, was attempting to emerge from local qualifying for the U.S. Open for the sixth time.

Olsakovsky joins the event's top three finishers from Wednesday's field of 70 golfers — Jimmy Ellis (-3) and Jason Li and Ben Huber, who both shot even-par — who advance to the sectional round later this month. From there, golfers can qualify for the 2021 U.S. Open, scheduled June 17-20 at Torrey Pines in California.

Butler native Jon Pratkanis finished Wednesday's action at 5-over 75.
