Teen accused of killing father sent to hospital
PITTSBURGH — A 13-year-old girl accused of fatally shooting her father — allegedly after years of sexual abuse — will be sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment.
Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning on Thursday initially ordered the girl sent to a juvenile detention center, but changed his instructions after hearing from a psychiatrist.
The girl was being held in the county jail — in a medical unit away. She will be moved to the Western Psychiatric Institute after her preliminary hearing today.
Matthew Booth, 34, of Elizabeth Township, died of a shotgun wound to the head early Monday.
The girl has told investigators she used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot him in the face. Her attorney, Patrick Nightingale, said she shot her father after years of sexual abuse. The Associated Press does not identify victims of possible sexual abuse.
The girl suffers from a mood disorder and "her judgment is severely impaired," said Dr. Christine Martone, a psychiatrist and director of the county Behavior Clinic.
The girl understands the charge against her, Martone said, recommending the teen be transferred to the psychiatric hospital for five days, though the stay likely will be extended up to 20 days.
The girl is charged as an adult with criminal homicide. But Nightingale said he plans to waive Friday's preliminary hearing and then petition the court to have the girl tried as a juvenile.
