Man faces felony for police chase
A suspected drunken and drugged driver faces a felony charge for leading Butler police on a chase in and out of the city during which he nearly collided with two other vehicles last month.
Toxicology reports recently showed John R. Dickison, 42, of Summit Township was impaired by alcohol and cocaine on Jan. 18 when he refused to pull over for city officers, according to court documents.
Police said a patrol officer about 3 p.m. spotted the suspect at East Quarry Street and Center Avenue driving a Jeep Cherokee with an expired inspection sticker.
The officer activated his emergency lights while following Dickison, who slowed down at one point but quickly sped up onto South Main Street. The officer sounded his siren.
Still, police said, the suspect would not stop; instead, he turned left onto West Quarry Street, right onto Center Avenue, another right onto Walker Avenue, a left at Brugh Avenue and a right onto Alpha Avenue.
He narrowly missed hitting an oncoming vehicle on Alpha Avenue, police said.
Moments later, after turning right onto Center Avenue, documents said, he almost struck another vehicle.
The chase continued up Center Avenue and then onto Zeigler Avenue, which becomes Herman Road as it heads into Summit Township. At least one other cruiser joined in the pursuit.
Police said the defendant turned onto a gravel driveway at a home in the 100 block of Herman Road. At the end of the driveway, the Jeep slid sideways to a stop.
Dickison allegedly got out and ran into the woods. But officers nabbed him a short time later.
Police said he smelled of alcohol and admitted drinking two beers. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test.
The results revealed his blood-alcohol level was 0.079 percent, just under the 0.08 percent minimum level under state law for being intoxicated.
Additionally, the toxicology showed the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, according to documents.
Dickison is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs, driving without valid inspection and a stop sign violation.
