PITTSBURGH — The public corruption trial for former Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht is scheduled to begin Jan. 28 before a federal judge in Pittsburgh.
Wecht was indicted in 2006 on 84 theft and fraud counts after federal prosecutors alleged he used his county staff to benefit himself and his private pathology practice. Wecht has denied all wrongdoing.
The trial has been delayed by various pretrial motions, including an effort to get much of the evidence thrown out.
At a Sept. 18 hearing, Wecht's attorneys are expected to attack the credibility and disciplinary history of the lead FBI agent on the case. The FBI has said the agent did nothing wrong in the Wecht investigation, and learned from having been disciplined for past misconduct.
IMPERIAL — The U.S. Transportation Security Agency will replace 21 privately contracted workers who check tickets and identification at Pittsburgh International Airport with government security workers. The workers being replaced are employed by Saint Louis-based Huntleigh USA, which says 329 of its other workers at 31 other U.S. airports might also lose their jobs."It's a government decision to take over the ticket-checking functions, and the truth of the matter is we don't have any right to refuse that," Huntleigh USA CEO Richard Sporn said. The switch scheduled for Thursday by the TSA will mean government workers will now be checking passenger IDs and boarding passes, as the security agency moves to a more sophisticated system to monitor passengers. The TSA has made similar changes at other airports.
