Counterfeit handbags net detention

PITTSBURGH — A West Africa native was sentenced to six months' home detention and three years' probation in federal court for trafficking in counterfeit goods, including Louis Vuitton handbags and designer clothing.

Mamadou Diallo, 42, who currently lives in Indianapolis, Ind., was convicted by a jury in April 2006 on one count of trademark counterfeiting.

State police stopped Diallo on Interstate 80 on July 13, 2005, for not having a light on his license plate as he drove through Mercer County. He was on a trip from New York City to Indiana at the time.

Diallo and a passenger gave a state trooper permission to search the van, where the trooper discovered an estimated $200,000 worth of items, including imitations of clothes and handbags by Luis Vuitton, Prada, Coach and Kate Spade.

Diallo, a native of Guinea, West Africa, said he was returning to Indiana, where he planned to sell the items.
