'Robber Bridegroom' University musical honors faculty member

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University departments of theater and dance will celebrate the artistic legacy of retiring faculty member and production choreographer Thom “T.C.” Cobb with this season’s musical production, “The Robber Bridegroom.”

Cobb is an associate professor and senior faculty member in the department of dance where he has taught since 1978.

“The Robber Bridegroom” is a bluegrass inspired fairy tale based on the 1942 novella by Eudora Welty with book and lyrics by Alfred Uhry and music by Robert Waldman.

Set in small town Mississippi, this fictional story follows Jamie Lockhart as he assumes a “Robin Hood” persona to rescue a wealthy plantation owner and to seduce his strong-willed daughter, Rosamund.

The cast includes Scott Dibello of Grove City, Ally Kryl of Slippery Rock and Matthew Buzanoski of Butler.

Laura Smiley, assistant professor of theater, is the director. Gordon Phetteplace, department chairman and associate professor of theater, is the scenic designer.

Andrew Hasenpflug, SRU department of dance musician, is the musical director, and Michael Boone is the technical director.

Alex Barnhart, a senior theater-design technology major from Butler, is the assistant to the technical director, and Tabitha Isacco, a senior theater-design technology major from Grove City, is the costume designer.

Performances are in the multipurpose room at the SRU theater department’s interim location in the University Union.

The show opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Other shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday to March 13 with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday.

Tickets are $7 for students with ID and $12 for general admission. Call 724-738-2645 for more information.
