Miller Minutes: ‘October has flown by’

If you are anything like me, you are shocked that October has flown by and Halloween is this weekend.

You are probably also without a costume. And how can you ever go to that party you were invited to without a costume? Or even if there is no party: How can you face the children yelling “trick-or-treat” at your door?

To avoid the humiliation, I’ve concocted a list of last-minute costume ideas for you. Feel free to put your own spin on any of them!

  • A rock star. With some eyeliner and a black T-shirt, you can take the stage.
  • A lamp. If you have a spare lampshade, this could be the easiest one.
  • A fisherman. Everyone has a raincoat!
  • The Morton Salt girl. For the girl with a yellow raincoat.
  • The man in the moon. Cut a sheet of paper, put your head through it. You’re set.
  • Your favorite athlete. Just throw on a jersey!

No matter what you decide to be, rest assured that somewhere in Butler County there is a place for you to wear your costume. I hope you will find an event below that inspires you to dress your best this Halloween!

Thursday

Zelienople will hold a Merchant Trick‑or‑Treat from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, with a Halloween parade to follow at 6:30 p.m. Parade registration begins at 5:30 p.m. behind NexTier Bank. Visit zelieboro.org for more information.

Enjoy a free show at the Butler Little Theatre in honor of its 85th season. “Pen Pals” is a heartwarming show about friendship you won’t want to miss. Friday

Families can dress up, take a stroll and collect some candy during Trick-or-Treat at Preston Park from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Organizers are asking all attendees to park at the Butler Farm Show grounds, 625 Evans City Road in Connoquenessing Township, and be bused to the park. Buses will run the duration of the event. Learn more on the event Facebook page.

Saturday

Hear everything from Billy Joel to Bach at a recital by Bryan Helsel in First English Lutheran Church, 241 N. Main St., Butler, at 2 p.m. Saturday. The church’s grand piano was recently restored, and this event will celebrate its rededication. Visit the event Facebook page for more information.

Halloween in Prospect starts at 5 p.m. Saturday with a costume contest at the fire department, 373 Main St., Prospect. Visit facebook.com/Prospectfire for details.
