JACKSON TWP — Cam Mueller and her teammates want some championship jewelry.

After Seneca Valley’s 3-0 sweep over sixth-seeded Hempfield in a WPIAL Class 6A girls volleyball quarterfinal Tuesday night, the No. 3 Raiders are one step closer to their wish.

“I feel great, personally,” said Mueller, a talented senior outside hitter. “I think everybody feels great, especially the seniors. We want to go out big. We’re all talking about, ‘I want to wear a ring at graduation. I want a medal.’”

No. 2 Pine-Richland, which beat No. 7 Mt. Lebanon, is the only thing in the way of a trip to the championship match, which will be held at Peters Township’s AHN Arena on Nov. 5. The Rams swept the regular season series against SV, and the third meeting will be held Monday at a site and time to be determined.

“First one was really close, it went five sets,” Seneca Valley head coach Brett Poirier said. “Second time, they got us pretty good in the first set, and then the next two were point for point. We know each other well, we’re in the same section. So we’re gonna have to bring it. … And, obviously, we’re looking forward to it, because we want some revenge.”

Mueller doesn’t think the Raiders (12-5) have landed their best punches just yet. Seneca Valley jumped out to big leads in the first two sets against the Spartans (8-9), coming out on top 25-21, 25-22 and 25-19.

“I don’t think we’ve really put up our full potential against them (Pine-Richland), and we always play best against better teams,” Mueller said. “I don’t think we’ve lived up to that yet, so I’m excited to do that.”

Mueller had six kills and an ace in the opening game alone and finished the contest with 15 kills.

“I think that my work in practice with our senior setter, Sheridan Gallagher, has been phenomenal,” Mueller said. “We get a lot of touches, a lot of reps, over and over and over.”

Entering the night, Poirier said, she had 905 career kills, and had her sights set on 1,000. She knows the Raiders have to march on to have that chance.

“The farther we go, the easier it’s gonna get,” Poirier said. “Especially since she’s putting up 20 a night, which is great. She’s a leader, and she’s my offensive weapon. She’s gotta be on. We go to her a lot, and she proves that when she’s on, we’re tough.”

Sophomore outside hitter Addison Corbett had nine kills and three aces, while junior middle hitter Lila Skarbek added six kills.
