Dog shot after biting police serving search warrant
A Butler dog was shot three times after it bit police serving a search warrant in July, according to charges filed by Butler police.
According to police, an officer was bitten by a black pit bull mix when police forced entry July 1 into a West Wayne Street home. The dog was shot three times, according to police, who did not indicate if the dog lived. The bitten officer was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital.
The search warrant was being executed on the home of Edward Larry Caszatt Jr., 55. Five people, including Caszatt, were detained during the investigation.
Police said they knocked on the door of the residence and used a PA system and emergency lights to announce their presence before entering.
Police also allegedly found 50 or more stamp bags, used and unused needles and related drug paraphernalia inside the home.
Caszatt was charged Sept. 23 with one misdemeanor count each of receiving stolen property, controlled substance possession and drug paraphernalia possession. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Nov. 9 before District Judge William Fullerton.
Another man at the home, Gilbert R. Gans, 46, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of controlled substance possession. Police said he had a stamp bag and a THC vape. Gans did not live at the home.
Gans is being held in Somerset County Jail. Attempts to reach the homeowner and Butler City Police Chief Robert O’Neill were unsuccessful.
