Penn State issues new discipline rules on campuses

STATE COLLEGE — Some new disciplinary procedures for students are in place at Penn State University following a year of review.

The new recommendations were put in place Tuesday and affect Penn State campuses throughout Pennsylvania, university officials said.

A committee came out with 12 recommendations last month, and president Graham Spanier sought more input from university and student groups for more possible revisions before the policies were implemented.

"The procedures we have in place reflect our commitment to an educational and rehabilitative process for students," Spanier said in a statement. "These recommendations strengthen that purpose."

One area which was revised involved procedures over whether the university should hand down discipline while students may also be under a separate criminal investigation.

Another revision touched on the extent to which disciplined students should be able to participate in extracurricular activities, including athletics.
