Parade Rotary names grand marshal
ZELIENOPLE — The borough will celebrate July Fourth with its annual Community Day this Friday with a parade, music and fireworks.
The parade will start at 11 a.m., with lineup beginning at 10 a.m. on High Street.
The parade starts on High Street, goes to Grand View Road to Main Street to East Beaver and ends at Zelienople Community Park.
The Zelienople Rotary Club, which organizes the parade every year, recently announced Archie Simpson will be the parade’s grand marshal and Chuck Underwood received this year’s Doc Viola Service Above Self Award.
Both will be honored by being in the first two vehicles in the parade, said Dan Fritch, Rotary president.
Both men were chosen for the awards by the Rotary board due to their long-running commitment to service in the community through Rotary.
Underwood served on borough council for 26 years, including 22 as council president, and helped form the Zelienople fire police in 2000.
“I just couldn’t believe it. I never looked forward to anything like that,” he said.
“Doc was a fantastic man, very dedicated to the community,” he said of Viola, a longtime community member who died in 2011.
Simpson, originally from Scotland, became a U.S. citizen in 1977 and has been a member of Rotary since 1980.
He has been active with the Rotary Foundation helping with initiatives including scholarships, the exchange program and the effort to eradicate Polio.
“I was excited about it and I appreciate the club picking me to do that,” he said. “Really, it’s a club honor, because they recognize the work I have been doing with the Rotary Foundation and that is an effort of all the members of the club not just myself.”
The Polio effort was launched by Rotary International in 1985 and has been a great success thanks to the work of volunteers around the world, Simpson said.
To date, only three countries still have a serious issue with Polio: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria, he said.
The parade typically lasts more than an hour and Rotary will announce awards afterward including best float, best tractor and best classic car.
The Community Day will kick off with the Firecracker 5K and 1 mile walk at 8 a.m. in Zelienople Community Park. Entry is $20 for adults and $15 for children 15 and younger. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Park. An award ceremony at 9:15 a.m. will follow the race.
There also will be food, drinks and entertainment throughout the day at the park.
At 2:30 p.m., the Duck Derby Dash will be held at the pool. For the duck dash, 1,000 rubber ducks will go down the slide and float across the pool, with the first three to finish winning cash prizes. Tickets are $10.
At 8 p.m., the Pittsburgh Philharmonic Orchestra will perform in the park’s amphitheater followed by a fireworks display at 9:45 p.m.
