Basketball star guilty in crack bust

Baker played guard at IUP in 2005-06

INDIANA — A former star basketball player at Indiana University of Pennsylvania has pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine.

Lawrence Baker, 26, admitted Thursday to having 12.5 grams of crack cocaine on Aug. 4, 2006, when police were investigating suspected drug trafficking at the Indiana apartment building where he lived.

Police converged on the laundry room and interrupted what they believed was a drug transaction between Baker and another man. They also said they found crack cocaine, more than $11,000 in cash and a box cutter with cocaine residue in Baker's apartment.

In a plea agreement, Indiana County prosecutors withdrew a felony count of delivery of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia and a felony count of criminal use of a communication facility.

Baker, a 6-foot-5 guard, scored 580 points in 28 games for IUP in 2005-06.
