Pgh. seeks to keep 45% parking tax
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh City Council members have voted to freeze a 45 percent parking tax despite a state law requiring the city to gradually lower the tariff.
If Mayor Luke Ravenstahl signs the bill approved Tuesday, it would put him in direct conflict with the state Legislature, which has passed a law requiring Pittsburgh to lower its parking tax by 10 percentage points by 2010.
Pittsburgh's parking tax is one of the highest in the state and is expected to generate about $47 million this year for the city.
The parking tax is one of the city's biggest moneymakers, after wage and real estate tariffs.
Ravenstahl has not yet decided whether to support the council legislation.
