Flooding after heavy rain spurs concern in Zelienople
ZELIENOPLE — After an unusual flooding incident, borough manager Don Pepe asked at the council meeting Monday night that the borough investigate its stormwater drainage.
Following a rainstorm on the night of June 24, flooding occurred in the Zelienople Community Park and on parts of Main Street.
A small creek that carries runoff from Interstate 79 to Main Street went above its banks during the storm. As a result, the entire swimming pool area was flooded.
The pool had to be drained, cleaned and refilled the next day before it could reopen, Pepe said.
Main Street drained quickly, but neither area had had significant flooding in decades with the pool never having been affected before, he said.
Pepe requested that the council’s stormwater committee, chaired by Marietta Reeb, consult with borough engineer Tom Thompson to investigate the cause of the incident and if the borough needs to do anything to better handle stormwater runoff.
“I’m just not sure what the answer is,” Pepe said. “The rain event was odd, but I’m not sure if this is indicative of a problem we need to address.”
Thompson said the flooding could have been caused by the severity of the storm, a blockage in the drainage system or stormwater from another area draining into the borough.
A study of the system also could result in a recommendation for additional stormwater retention measures along the creek or elsewhere, he said.
