Police charge man with consecutive-day DUIs

2nd case involves rear-end crash on S. Pike Road

It was a case of deja vu for a Buffalo Township police officer after he arrested the same man for driving under the influence on consecutive days.

The suspected drunken driver, Kenneth J. Gibson, 53, of Winfield Township, is behind bars in lieu of $100,000 bond after his second DUI arrest in the township that followed a vehicle crash Saturday.

Gibson also is facing another DUI for an unrelated December arrest in Winfield Township.Buffalo Township police Sgt. Scott Hess said he found the defendant around 11:35 a.m. Jan. 29 in a PT Cruiser in a ditch a little off Reimer Road after a 911 call for a possibly intoxicated man parked on the road. The car was stopped, but running, and it was in gear. Because of his suspected intoxicated condition, Gibson was not responding to the officer who came upon him.Hess eventually had to enter the car from the passenger side to place the vehicle in park and to turn off the engine, police said. In the driver's footwell, the officer noticed two opened bottles of liquor.Later, because of Gibson still not responding, Hess and police Chief Tim Derringer, who subsequently arrived, had to remove him from the car.Gibson was arrested and taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights for a blood test, which he allegedly refused. He subsequently was admitted to the hospital, police said, for treatment of his “high level of alcohol intoxication.”A tow operator hauled away the defendant's car. At some point, he was discharged from the hospital. Police did not immediately charge him.It wouldn't be long before police were reunited with the defendant and his PT Cruiser. About 12:55 p.m. Saturday, police said, he rear-ended his car into another vehicle on South Pike Road, just several miles from where they found him the day before. The other driver and three passengers, two of them young children, apparently were not injured.Police Sgt. Scott Hess recognized Gibson from the prior day's arrest, according to charging documents. The defendant appeared intoxicated and he subsequently showed impairment during field sobriety tests, investigators said. He was arrested again. Police again took him to Allegheny Valley Hospital, where he again allegedly refused to submit to a blood test.District Judge Wayne Seibel on Saturday arraigned Gibson on charges of DUI, driving with a suspended license, DUI-related and three other traffic violations. On Wednesday, police charged him in connection with the suspected DUI Jan. 29. District Judge Sue Haggerty later arraigned him on charges of DUI, driving during suspension and two traffic offenses. His preliminary hearing in each case is set Feb. 17 at Haggerty's office in Saxonburg. Online court records did not list an attorney.Gibson, meanwhile, faces a preliminary hearing Feb. 24 stemming from a drunken driving arrest Dec. 16 in Winfield Township. State police in that case charged him with DUI and three traffic offenses.
