Project gets $13K from golf outing
CRANBERRY TWP — The Cranberry Township Community Chest’s 2015 Project of the Year got another substantial financial boost this week when it was announced the project will get $13,000 from the golf outing during the Community Days celebration in July.
Bruce Mazzoni, chairman of the community chest, said the golf outing was jointly sponsored by the Westinghouse Electric and the township’s volunteer fire company.
The golf outing, which kicks off the Community Days celebration, was at the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course. It raised a total of $26,000, half of which went to the community chest and half of which went to the township’s volunteer fire company.
The $13,000 given to the community chest is for the Project of the Year, which is an initiative to recruit and retain more volunteer firefighters in the county.
The community chest now has raised $186,342 in a little over a month. It has a goal of $500,000.
That money will go to establishing new educational scholarships at Butler County Community College for students who take a certified course in firefighting. Those students must pledge to serve for two years as a volunteer firefighter to receive the scholarship.
It also will pay $130,000 for a new emergency trailer that will be used for training, education and recruitment.
The other half of the proceeds from the golf outing is donated to the Cranberry fire company to help it recruit and retain more firefighters.
Mazzoni said he is happy that the community chest has such strong corporate partners like Westinghouse, a company always ready to donate to a good cause.
“It was a great event and a great day,” he said. “I love the partnership we have with Westinghouse, and I know they are very happy that the money will go to a great cause. I’m very ecstatic with it.”
