Armstrong County bank robber sought
LEECHBURG, Armstrong County — Local and state police and FBI agents continue their investigation of a bank robbery Thursday morning in the borough’s business district.
Investigators said a middle-aged white man about 10:40 a.m. walked into the Farmers & Merchants Bank on Market Street and handed a teller a note that claimed he had a gun.
No gun, however, was displayed, Leechburg police said. No one was hurt.
Borough police this morning said they are “working some leads” but no one has been arrested.
“There are no suspects at this time,” Leechburg Mayor Shawn Lerch said.
Authorities would not say how much money was taken in the robbery.
A be-on-the-lookout bulletin immediately notified police departments throughout northwestern Pennsylvania of the holdup and provided a description of the robber.
The man is described as 55 or older, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 190 pounds, with big ears and a big nose.
The suspect appeared to have thick gray hair and was wearing a navy blue golf shirt, jeans and a light blue ball cap. He also was carrying a blue zippered bag, which was used to haul away the money, police said.
There were no customers in the bank when the man walked in and approached one of three tellers at work. He handed the female teller a note saying he wanted cash and no dye pack.
The man also placed the zippered bag on the counter. The teller placed the money in the bag.
“He didn’t really say much,” Lerch said of the robber. “He was very calm and very swift.”
The man left the bank and was last seen walking south on Market Street toward Second Street.
The bank’s security cameras caught images of the suspect, whose face was partially hidden by his hat pulled down.
The state police and FBI are assisting borough police in the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Leechburg police at 724-842-8531, or call 911.
