Prostitution arrest ends with probation

A West Mifflin woman will spend a year on probation for prostituting out of a budget motel in Cranberry Township.

Shawna M. Thomas, 37, pleaded guilty to promoting prostitution and possession of drug paraphernalia and was sentenced Tuesday by Butler County Judge William Shaffer.

According to court records, Thomas was one of two women arrested in April following a joint vice investigation between police in Cranberry and Moon Township, Allegheny County.

Police searched websites that advertise female companions for money, court documents said. By cell phone text message, the officers arranged to meet their “dates” at the Red Roof Inn on Route 19 and arrested them there.

Court records say Thomas was found with a suspected crack pipe, syringes and other alleged drug contraband.

Thomas’ co-defendant in the case, Savannah M. Groves, 47, of Pittsburgh still faces charges.

Court records allege Groves, at the time of her arrest, had a number of condoms and a loaded .40-caliber Glock pistol with a high-capacity magazine holding 22 rounds of ammunition.

Groves, upon her arrest, asked if she could call her baby sitter and arrange for child care, according to a police affidavit. Police allowed her to call on her cell phone. But she allegedly began deleting information from the phone, police said, and smashed the device. Police said they had to forcibly subdue her when she tried to get away.
