Church will hold two food distributions this month

LYNDORA — Allison Park Church will hold two food distributions this month at its Butler County location at the Lyndora American Legion Post 778, 150 Legion Memorial Lane.

The drive-through events will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, according to Gregg Jacobs, pastor of the Butler County campus of the church.

The church partnered with the local nonprofit Network of Hope to launch the Pittsburgh chapter of the Boxes of Hope initiative to provide local families with food and supplies during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Jacobs urged people to register beforehand at allisonparkchurch.online to insure they receive a box of nonperishable food. He said the church distributed 97,000 meals at two April food distributions across the church's six campuses, including Lyndora, Deer Lakes, Mount Nebo, Hampton Township, North Side and Ohio River.

Volunteers load the boxes into the recipients' vehicles during drive-through distributions.

“It's an expansion of the food bank we have at our Hampton campus,” said church spokeswoman Bethany Jarmul, adding that a box of the food should be enough to feed a family of four for two weeks.

The 25-pound box contains items such as canned vegetables, peanut butter and macaroni and cheese.

“We want to serve our communities in a very practical way during this time of need,” said Jeff Leake, lead pastor of Allison Park Church.

The church will receive two semitrailer truck deliveries of food and supplies from two nonprofit organizations, Feed the Children and Convoy of Hope, and is also accepting donations from local businesses and individuals in the community.

Jarmul said the church has long partnered with Convoy of Hope, and this was its first time working with Feed the Children.

Church volunteers box up the donated food before the distribution dates.

Organizers will take every effort to keep volunteers and recipients safe, including sanitizing all items before placing them in boxes. Additionally, volunteers will wear gloves and masks and maintain a safe distance.

“We love the community and this is one of the ways we are looking to continue to help them out in this crisis,” Jacobs said.
