Lightning hits monument in Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG — A monument at the Gettysburg battlefield that was struck by lightning might need to be completely disassembled to assess the damage, the National Park Service said Wednesday.

The monument to the 6th New York Cavalry was struck Oct. 9 and it may cost about $100,000 to repair.

Vic Gavin, the head of the park's monument preservation branch, said damage may be worse inside the monument because lightning could have superheated the moisture in the stone and mortar.

The 1889 monument stands 24 feet high on a 14-by-10-foot base. It has a tower with turrets at each corner; one of the turrets was knocked loose by the lightning.
