State has most ATV deaths
PITTSBURGH — Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh says it's seen more children for all-terrain vehicle injuries so far this year than in all last year.
The hospital said 83 children had been admitted as of Wednesday, compared with a record 72 admissions in 2006.
The hospital's Dr. Barbara Gaines says the number of children being admitted has been increasing.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission isn't surprised.
Spokesman Scott Wolfson says that from 1982 through 2005, Pennsylvania led the nation with nearly 400 ATV-related deaths.
Wolfson says about one-quarter of deaths and injuries involve children younger than 16. He says most are injured riding adult ATVs.
