Late fee given for tardiness

Most small grain producers took time out of their busy schedules to timely report on planted acreages of wheat, barley and oats. For those who missed the June 15 deadline, they will hopefully find time to report all other crops and land used by the July 15 deadline.

A late fee is now being assessed on all small grain reports since we are beyond June 15.

Acreage reports must be completed by July 15 to avoid the late fee for corn, soybeans, hay, fruits, vegetables and all other land uses. Although there is always plenty of work to do at the farm, sometimes a trip to the FSA office or a phone call can make quite a difference in the bottom line.

Pennsylvania Agricultural Statistics were recently released for last year. Some of the information for Butler County includes:4,100 milk cows2,400 hogs22,000 cattle and calves1,850 sheep and lambs5,200 corn silage acres40,700 all forage acres2,300 wheat acres1,000 barley acres5,900 oat acres3,100 soybean acres175 potato acres1,175 total farmsThese are just a few of the interesting agriculture statistics from the summary. Remember this is not the absolute numbers - just an estimate. Most seem reasonably accurate with a few exceptions. Personally, I think someone would be hard pressed to find 2,400 hogs in the county. In any event, the complete statistical summary is available online at www.nass.usda.gov/pa.
